Overcoming ADHD

Overcoming ADHD - Lucas

Lucas, a 10-year-old boy diagnosed with mild ADHD, exhibited challenges in processing speed and writing skills, as well as difficulties in executive functioning (EF) skills such as time management, organization, and task completion. Due to his parents' plan to change his school, they expressed concerns about helping Lucas adapt to the new environment and meet the different expectations.

To address these issues, personalized interventions were implemented for Lucas. He engaged in a series of exercises specifically designed to enhance his attention span and ability to remain focused on tasks. Additionally, timed challenges were introduced to improve his processing speed, while various memory techniques were taught to aid him in remembering his responsibilities. Recognizing the importance of parental support, Lucas's parents actively assisted him in creating a designated study area free from distractions. This space included a noticeboard where Lucas could plan and display his weekly schedule. Furthermore, Lucas and his mother collaborated on crafting visual cue cards that he could utilize to outline his daily tasks in a specific order.

Initially, Lucas experienced anxiety regarding his transition to the new school. However, after developing a well-thought-out plan for the change, he adjusted smoothly to the new routine. With consistent practice, Lucas gradually took ownership of his visual schedule and became adept at utilizing it independently. As a result, he stopped missing the school bus and successfully completed his tasks and chores with minimal reminders. Both Lucas and his parents now take pride in his increased self-sufficiency and academic accomplishments.
